South Centre Workshop on Trade in Services

South Centre held its annual Workshop on Trade in Services from 20-24 March 2006. The objective of the workshop was to consider the critical role of services to development and the ways in which the negotiations on the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) should assist developing countries and LDCs to meet their national development objectives.

The first two days were devoted to LDC and services related issues covering topics such as domestic regulation, a mechanism for according LDCs special priority in the context of the LDC Modalities and the outcomes and implications of the Hong Kong Ministerial Conference for LDCs. The remaining three days were open to all developing countries and included further discussion on issues such as domestic regulation; private sector and historical perspectives on GATS negotiations; preconditions for successful liberalisation in services; sector specific interests and challenges for development; and strategies for ensuring pro-development outcomes in services.

South Centre wishes to thank the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) for funding the workshop, including the participation of LDC participants from capitals and speakers'.
