Event Description

On 30 November, 2007, IISD, the South Centre and the Center for International Environmental Law will host a special one day workshop on International Investment Law: Developing Country Issues and Interests. The workshop is a follow-up to IISD’s hosting of the First Annual Forum of Developing Country Investment Negotiators in Singapore on 1-2 October 2007. That Forum was attended by over 30 negotiators from 25 developing countries. (See http://www.iisd.org/investment/capacity/dci_forum_2007.asp for all the details and papers)

The November Workshop will update participants on key issues in the International Investment Law regime today. This includes the extent of ongoing negotiations in this field at the multilateral, regional and bilateral levels, their overlap with WTO issues and negotiations, the growing number of international arbitrations against states and the issues they raise, and some emerging options for developing countries to improve their influence on this critically important legal regime going forward.

A full draft agenda for the Workshop can be found below. Lunch will be provided for all participants.
