Internship |
Duration and
Eligibility Criteria
Applications are welcome who fulfil the following eligibility criteria:

They should have completed or be completing a bachelor’s or
graduate (master's) degree in law, economics, sciences, international
relations or related fields and should have some work-related
experience.

Good written and spoken English (proficiency in French, Spanish,
Arabic or Mandarin being a bonus)
and word processor skills are essential.

While academic and other relevant qualifications are an important
element in the selection process, a demonstrated commitment to
development objectives generally will also be assessed.

While the general internship programme is open to all eligible
persons regardless of nationality, nationals of countries that are
Member States of the South Centre, the Group of 77 and China, or
the Non-Aligned Movement, are especially encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities
The
interns will be given different tasks which will be tailor-made to
help them gain experience and knowledge in the various areas of work
covered by the project. A core component of the internship will
entail hands-on experience in the preparation of background and
research papers, providing research and drafting assistance, and
attending
WTO, United Nations, various nongovernmental organization and South
Centre meetings and submitting meeting reports.
The intern will work under the guidance of the Programme Coordinator
of the South Centre Programme to which he/she is assigned. Interns
applying under the General Internship track will be assigned to
either the Trade for
Development Programme or the
Global Governance
for Development Programme. The intern will also have the
opportunity to work with the professional staff of the South Centre
on various issue areas. The work of the intern will also be subject
to the Staff Regulations of the South Centre, although the intern
will not be considered as a member of the the South Centre staff.
The Terms and
Conditions of the Internship

A
written agreement will be established between the South Centre and
the intern.

There shall be no remuneration, subsidy, compensation or
entitlement from the South Centre to the intern, unless otherwise
expressly stated. However, depending on financial need, a monthly
living stipend may be provided on a case-by-case basis.

Interns will be required to spend not less than 2 months up to a
maximum of 6 months at the South Centre on a full-time basis,
unless otherwise specified. Interns applying for summer internship
placements with the South Centre will be required to spend not
less than 10 weeks on a full-time basis.

Apart from the general responsibilities outlined above, each
intern will be required to prepare at least one substantive
research paper on trade and development-related issues during
their internship.

Acceptance for internships at the South Centre is not in any way
related to a job at the Centre.

Except where otherwise indicated to the intern in writing, travel
expenses, including visa fees, to and from Geneva will be the
responsibility of the intern.

Interns shall also be responsible for their own insurance for
illness and accidents.

Where necessary, and as appropriate, the South Centre will provide
assistance to interns in obtaining an entry visa to Switzerland.

At the end of the internship, the intern will be required to
prepare a written exit report evaluating the internship.

The intern will also receive a letter certifying that they
undertook an internship at the South Centre, evaluating their
performance and giving recognition to their work experience at the
Centre.
Application and
Selection Process
The
procedures for application and selection are as follows:

Internships may be applied for and may begin at any time of the
year.

standard

form is available on the website.

Applicants should complete the form and send it together with a CV
detailing their relevant qualifications and experience to the
Centre, either through post or e-mail. Whenever possible,
applications should be sent via e-mail to
internships@southcentre.org.
Please mark clearly in the subject line “Application for South
Centre
General Internship”. Also, please if possible indicate whether the
internship is sought to be with the Trade for Development
Programme or the Global Governance for Development Programme.

Only short-listed applicants will be contacted. Applicants who do
not receive an answer within one month of the submission of their
application should consider their applications unsuccessful. Any
further correspondence will not be entertained.
Candidates who are short-listed will be informed of the decision
and an interview will be organised. If the applicant is not in
Geneva or can not otherwise be available for an interview
personally, a telephone interview may be arranged. A decision on
the successful candidate will, as far as possible, be made at
least one month before the start of the internship. Copies of
qualifications, previous employment certificates, publications
etc. should not be sent with the application form. These will be
requested if required.
