THERE is a certain small-town charm about Martin Khor that has stuck with him all these years. He is most comfortable in his trademark batik shirt although he has to be properly suited up these days as he interacts with policy-makers and world leaders on the global stage. And home is still where the heart is.

“I am based in Geneva but due to my job, which is to understand and be involved in global issues, I travel a lot, to many parts of the world.  Article: Week of Decision for Global Economy

In the column Global Trends in the Malaysian newspaper The Star (dated 30 March 2009), the South Centre's Executive Director Martin Khor writes on the G20 Summit taking place this week in London.

Hopes that the G20 Summit will make decisions adequate to address the global economic crisis are fading.  The danger is that the leaders will give more resources to the IMF, while not reforming the IMF.  Meanwhile the UN has just held a special dialogue on the crisis, with Prof. Stiglitz presenting a summary of the report of the UN Commission.

At the African Union's Trade Ministers' conference in Addis Ababa in mid-March, there was great anxiety about the growing effects of the global recession.  In particular, African countries are worried about the Economic Partnership Agreements being negotiated with the European Union.

ARTICLE: EFFECTS OF THE GLOBAL ECONOMIC CRISIS ON DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

This article was written by Dr. Martin Khor, the Executive Director of the South Centre. In this paper, he analysed that Global Economic Crisis had severely effects for developing countries through both the financial route and trade route, then proposed developing countries National, Regional and International resolutions to counter the crisis.

'The sources of the global financial crisis lie in the financial and other policies in the developed countries, especially the United States. Developing countries were not responsible, but they are now being affected by the crisis.  In some developing countries, the effects have been much more severe than in the developed countries.

The developing countries are being affected through various transmission routes, mainly finance and trade.  This has affected the trade balance, balance of payments and foreign reserves of some countries, and a few are already facing a new debt crisis.   The output, jobs and social development of many countries are also affected.
