Mr. Vice Yu, Coordinator, Global Governance for Development Programme of the South Centre, made a presentation on " The Future of Global Economic Governance in the Face of Global Crises – South Perspectives" at CIDSE Expert Meeting: Crises in global governance, opportunities for global justice organized by CIDSE (Internacional Cooperation for Development and Solidarity), Brussels on 12 February 2009. The meeting summary is available at: http://www.cidse.org/aboutus/?id=1011 T.R.A.D.E. Policy Brief No.1 Executive SummaryThis T.R.A.D.E. Policy Brief of the South Centre discusses the concept of “policy space” and its role in promoting the development of the South. This is founded on the principles of the equal sovereignty of States, the right to development, and the provision of special and differential treatment to developing countries. The “one size fits all” economic approaches of the Bretton Woods institutions and the WTO have not worked. It hence argues that policy space is needed so as to provide developing counties with the freedom to choose the best mix of policies possible for achieving sustainable and equitable economic development given their unique and individual social, political, economic, and environmental conditions. 1 Sep 2008: INSouth (the Intellectual Network for the South) is now LIVE.
